A to Z Primer for 2013

In keeping with the oh-so- vogue end-of-year lists, I’ve complied an A to Z list to help you get primed for 2013.

We’ll start with one of the most challenging for small business owners:

Accountability: It takes discipline and practice, but find a way to be accountable to yourself this year. When you make a commitment to your business, follow through on the date you intended.

Brevity: Hone your skills at making your points with brevity. Your message will be stronger and more lasting.

Courage: It takes courage to be a business owner so get out there and courageously tell the world about how your company can help them save money, save time or solve a problem.

Discounts: Be wary of offering discounts for your services. Contrary to common belief, discounts don’t get you more business; they just reduce your profits.

Evolve: Your business is organic and, as such, it needs to evolve within your environment. Update your collateral, freshen your web content and (refer to #A) maintain your social networking.

Fuel: Marketing is fuel for your business. Just like your car, it needs a constant flow of fuel to run.

Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Hidden Value: Spend the time to uncover the hidden value of your products and services. These aspects are often the reason why people buy.

Inbound Marketing: The strategy of attracting interested prospects to you by providing compelling content on the web, in blogs, via social media, etc. Make sure yours is up to snuff.

Junk: Unsubscribe to all those cumbersome email lists that you never read and stop the distraction.

Kudos: Studies show that many employees would rather be recognized for their good work than receive a raise. Give kudos where kudos are due.

Limits: Know your limits and focus on what you really do well. It’s ok to say “No” when something is not a good fit for your business.

Moxie: Show some! Be determined in reaching your goals.

Net Profit: Is the money left over after all your expenses including overhead has been paid. Create a goal to increase your net profit.

Obsess: Be obsessive when it comes to understanding what your customers want and respond accordingly.

Positivity: Start your day with a positive act. If you start with doom and gloom, that’s how your day will progress.

Quaternate: Use this term the next time you need to divide something into four. Impress your employees and friends with your stellar vocabulary.

Results: Measure all your marketing efforts by tracking and measuring the results. This will give you the information you need to make smart decisions for future marketing expenditures.

Systematize: Multiple procedures make a system. Get all your business operations systematized – in writing – so you can more easily turn over responsibilities as you hire new employees.

Tenacity: If you are trying to get more customers, and you are certain they are your target market, be tenacious. When the time is right, they will think of you to buy.

Unusual: Differentiate your business by doing the unusual to delight your customers. (Bonus: Three U’s in this word)

Velocity: The velocity in which you react to a customer’s needs speaks volumes into how much you value their business.

Wisdom: “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” – Albert Einstein

X-Factor: Become the person that has a strong and unpredictable influence on your industry. Establish yourself as an expert in your field.

YOLO: You Only Live Once. You define what this means to you and your business.

Zillionaire: A lofty goal that can be a real driving force in your business!

The whole point of this message is to get you pumped for a new year: full of new opportunities, new challenges and new successes. Make it a great 2013
